Considering the cloud under which WVTech fled the NCAA - I just don't see them ever taking them back.

This won't affect WVT. Their intent to return to the WVIAC has been well received and even courted by those members. It is the NCAA that is holding that up.

All in all this is just another attempt to absorb the NAIA piece by piece without making any concessions. Still can't believe universities want to give up control of athletics like that.

WV Tech's return has not been well received at all by the WVIAC. The conference's membership has not voted to sponsor them for NCAA membership. Yet, Wise received a unanimous vote. According to the Charleston newspapers, there's still a lot of bad blood and Tech is a long shot to ever get back in the WVIAC.

1986 WVIAC Tournament Champions to be Honored
Lindsey | March 3rd, 2011

The WVU Tech Department of Athletics will be hosting a reception honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1986 men’s basketball West Virginia Tech WVIAC Tournament Championship team in conjunction with the WVIAC tournament championship round this Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center.

Golden Bear Alumni and Friends are invited to a pre-event reception to honor and remember Tech’s 91-81 WVIAC championship victory over the University of Charleston. The reception will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm in Parlor C of the Civic Center; lite snacks and refreshments will be served.

Following the reception, the 1986 Men’s basketball team will be recognized/honored at halftime of the WVIAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship game. Tickets for admission into the WVIAC Championship game can be purchased at the gate for eight dollars.

Seems like the WVIAC is being more than friendly.

.....and I would imagine that next year they'll honor the 1987 champions.

Honoring a 25 anniversary and getting an official invitation to re-join the WVIAC are two different things. The fact is, they have not been invited.

Here is an enlightening report from 2009:

http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Joint/PERD ... 1_2009.pdf

It details some of WVTech's mismanagement with their athletic department (14 AD's in 19 years!). Give it a read - interesting stuff.

Wow, that is certainly an interesting report. I didn't think things like that really happened as far as compliance and so forth. NWOS got hit harder for A LOT less.

Some military slang comes to mind.....but we'll just call it a hot mess.

Well if the WVIAC stops at 16, who ever gets left out can join that new Ohio Conf. that only has 4 members, they can dip into WV, western PA, NY for members.

And the advantage for WV Tech is that the OCAC isn't an NAIA OR NCAA conference . . . of course a small group of tiny Christian schools won't want to deal with WV Tech in their league (or travel there) so that's a no go.

Basically WV Tech has 3 choices, even if their long-term future is clearly with the WVIAC:

1. Commit to the NAIA for the near future, build an NCAA-style department with compliance people, etc. and actively participate in NAIA governance. Hire some people who don't drool or trip over their own dangly parts every time they do anything, AND STOP CHEATING. After five or six years of solid citizenship, QUIETLY start talking to the WVIAC, self-impose NCAA sanctions while still in the NAIA (ban yourself from post-season for a year) - and when you get invited by the WVIAC, THEN take your respectable program back to the NCAA.

2. Drop athletics. Unlike most other NAIA schools, WV Tech isn't dependent to some degree on athletics to make up its student body. Just stop it. You're broke, you suck at this, and you have no one to manage it. You can pick it up again in 5 or 10 years and maybe hire someone smart to reconstitute it then. In the mean time, you'll save some money. When boosters complain tell them they should've cheated smarter.

3. (the most likely) Keep doing what you're doing and be consigned to athletic limbo - the NCAA isn't going to let you in because you're a steaming pile of putrescence. The MSC is eventually going to kick you out because you're ineligible for everything and inconvenient (unless they need your number for some reason, but someone else will eventually come along). Of course, not having access to post-season isn't really a problem when you've got the kind of program you have . . . it's not like the WVIAC "needs" you.
